Tips for sick days
During illnesses like colds and flu, controlling your BG
level may be more difficult.
You can use the Temporary Rate program to increase or
decrease your basal rate for the duration of your illness.
Warning: Never stop taking your insulin because of
illness. Even if you are too sick to eat, your body still
needs insulin.
Warning: During an illness, check your BG level
before mealtime and every 2 to 4 hours. Check your
urine for ketones until you feel better.
Warning: Even though you are sick, you still need
fluids, calories and carbohydrates. Drink 4 to 8
ounces of clear liquids containing sugar every 30 to 60
minutes.
Contact your healthcare provider whenever:
•Your BG level is higher than 250 mg/dl (14 mmol/L)
after delivering a correction bolus
•Persistent or excessive nausea, vomiting and/or diar-
rhea lasts longer than 4 hours
you have ketones in your urine
Skin infections
Skin infections may be experienced when using an insu-
lin pump because the cannula or needle remains in place
for 2 to 3 days. It is vital that proper aseptic technique be
used. Signs and symptoms may include: redness, swell-
ing, soreness, drainage, and/or the skin may feel warm to
the touch
Treatment: immediately change your infusion set and
access device, and switch to a new access site well away
from the original site. Contact your healthcare provider.
