Using the Pump - Basics

Loading a cartridge

The Load feature in the pump menu takes you through

each step needed to load a filled cartridge in the pump

and start delivering insulin.

Warning: Always use the pump’s Load feature

when starting a new cartridge. This will assure that

the cartridge is properly loaded and the tubing and

access device are filled with insulin.

Warning: Whenever you load a new cartridge and

attach an infusion set, you must test your BG

level within 1 to 2 hours to make sure that insulin

is being properly delivered. If you do not test

within this time-frame, and insulin delivery is de-

layed or blocked, you may develop hyperglycemia. If

desired, you can use the Glucose Reminder alert to

remind you to test your BG level (see Personalizing

Alerts, page 28).

Warning: Always use “aseptic” technique, particu-

larly when working with the cartridge, infusion

set, catheter and access site. An increased risk of

skin infection is associated with pump use, as the

access device remains in place for 2 or more days (see

“Aseptic Technique,” page 9).

Supplies required

In addition to the pump, you will need:

•1 vial short-acting, U100 insulin that is room tem-

perature (if the insulin is too cold, it may form

bubbles in the cartridge and the tubing)

•1 Deltec Cozmo

™

3mL Insulin Cartridge

•1 Deltec insulin infusion set

• Antiseptic solution for preparing access site (I.V.

Prep

, isopropyl alcohol, Betadine

, Hibiclens

, etc.)

•Medical tape and/or sterile dressing for securing

access device to your body

Warning: Always read the instructions for use

provided with the insulin, catheter, infusion set, and

any other accessory used with the Deltec Cozmo

™

Insulin Pump.

1. Filling the cartridge

Use aseptic technique (see page 9).

Fill the cartridge according to the Instructions for Use

supplied with the cartridge.
