Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)
A serious condition that occurs when there is not enough
insulin to allow the glucose in the blood to be used by the
cells in your body for energy. The cells begin to burn the
body’s stored fat reserves for fuel. Ketones are produced
when fat is burned and these ketones change the chemis-
try of the body. Ketones can be detected using a blood or
urine test. DKA can happen within a few hours when there
is not enough insulin available, and can lead to uncon-
sciousness and death. Signs and symptoms include: dry
skin/tongue, nausea and/or vomiting, fruity odor to breath,
shortness of breath, rapid pulse, rapid breathing, BG level
over 300 mg/dl (17 mmol/L), unresponsiveness, coma.
Treatment: since some of the early symptoms may be
explained as flu or food poisoning, it is vital to immedi-
ately test your BG level and urine for ketones. Treat the
high blood glucose, and if moderate to high levels of ke-
tones are present in your urine, follow the DKA corrective
action plan from your your healthcare provider. Call your
healthcare provider.
Checking your BG level regularly and properly treating
high blood glucose (hyperglycemia) can help you avoid
DKA.
