Using the Pump - Basics

2. Attaching an infusion set and loading a filled car-

tridge into the pump

Warning: To avoid accidentally infusing insulin,

disconnect the infusion set tubing from the access

device (or site) before removing a used cartridge

or replacing an infusion set. Never use the pump’s

“load cartridge” or “fill tubing” features while an

infusion set is connected to your body. You could

deliver an unintended dose of insulin, resulting in

low blood glucose (hypoglycemia).

1. Turn the cartridge cap counter-

clockwise (left) approximately

turn and remove it from the

pump (see Figure 9). If re-

quired, remove the used

cartridge (you may get the

“Cartridge Removed” alert;

press OK). NOTE: turning the

cartridge cap may also turn the

cartridge, so it may already be

disconnected from the pushrod when the cap is

removed. If not, turn the cartridge

turn to the left

to disconnect it from the pushrod.

2. Place the cartridge cap over the tip of the new car-

tridge; remove the protective

cap from the luer end of the

infusion set and insert the luer

through the hole in the cap and

firmly tighten it onto the tip of

the cartridge (see Figure 10).

Warning: If not properly

tightened, insulin could leak

from this connection and

disrupt delivery (the insulin

that leaks out is not being delivered into your body

like it should be and, depending on how much

insulin is leaking, could cause your BG level to rise).

Signs of leakage can also mean opportunity for

contamination leading to infec-

tion.

3. Insert the new cartridge into the

cartridge chamber (see Figure

11). Gently turn the cartridge

clockwise (right) about

to fasten it onto the pushrod

(you may need to first turn the

cartridge until it drops onto the

pushrod).
